Montpelier skier wins Eastern Cup Opener

STOWE — An up-and-coming convert
from alpine skiing and a seasoned Olympic biathlete raced to
convincing cross-county victories during Sunday's 10-kilometer
Banknorth Eastern Cup Opener at Trapp Family Lodge.
Eighteen-year-old Liz Stephen of East Montpelier captured the
women's race in 32 minutes, 25.7 seconds, while 29-year-old U.S.
Biathlon Team member Jeremy Teela won the men's race in

Ski Team Day' Hits the Slopes

December 11, 2005) -
The U.S. Ski Team this week announced the launch of U.S. Ski
Team Day, a promotional event to benefit U.S. Ski Team athletes.
The program will take place on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, at
various ski areas across the country. Some resorts will host the
event on Friday, Feb. 10, to celebrate the opening ceremonies of
the Torino Olympic Winter Games. Participating resorts will
donate one dollar per lift ticket or cross country trail pass
sold on event day to back U.S. Ski Team initiatives. Nearly 70
alpine and nordic ski areas have pledged support to date....read

So far this season we’ve had an
October opening on mostly natural snow at two ski areas,
unusually early openings at several other areas and a
record-breaking Thanksgiving weekend at a dozen or so New
England resorts.
Since then, of course, we’ve
had to suffer though a long stretch of fog and heavy, warm rain.
As I write this we’ve got a
deep freeze and snow falling over the north country. It’s safe

Breckenridge Ski Resort recently opened the highest chairlift in
North America, the Imperial Express SuperChair. Breckenridge's
newest high-speed quad will reach an elevation of 12,840 feet
and transport skiers and riders to the top of Breckenridge's
renowned Peak 8. The Imperial Express is opening more than a
month early due to record snowfall that has allowed mountain
